If you’re not comfortable with this type of content no worries! You are valid and we’ll see you next week!

The topic of sex magic can be intimidating, awkward, uncomfortable for some. I myself am a little nervous to talk about it on such a public platform. This is because in many parts of the world sex is considered a taboo topic. And in the US in particular women are bombarded with patriarchal, puritanical views on the body and deification of the virginal woman.

We are taught that respectable women do not enjoy or want sex. Meanwhile, the female form is plastered on advertisements to sell anything from a boat to a cheeseburger.

Most witches enjoy the freedom from the patriarchy and the feminist values of the witchcraft practice. Even so, it can be difficult to overcome this socialization. Erica asked me earlier if I wanted to skip this episode and talk about something less… embarrassing because I was getting nervous. And I told her that that’s exactly why we shouldn’t. So here we are.

If you’re embarrassed, it’s okay. That’s part of overcoming our social conditioning. And if you’re not shy about your sexuality at all and want us to get to the good part, you’ll just need to wait a bit longer.

What is Sex Magic?

Basically sex magic is a type of magic that helps you build energy intentionally and release it through oragsm. A few things to make note of: sex magic does not require a male and female component. You can practice sex magic solo through masturbation, or with a partner, or in a group. It can be done with a long term partner or a one night stand.

Additionally, sex magic can be done by those who aren’t sexually active. It’s about claiming your power, understanding your body, and connecting to your needs and desires. Instead of releasing the energy you build up with orgasm, you can conserve it for another use.

At a basic level, sex magic is a method of intentionally using your body as a conduit for energy.

Why Practice Sex Magic?

For one thing, it can be fun. For another, it’s a really good way to get to know your body and what brings you pleasure. It’s more about learning to love yourself than it is about simply getting to the climax.

And keep in mind, you can use sex magic to manifest anything, not just sex and love and lust related things. The energy you build with arousal and passion is the same as the energy you build with a steady drum beat, chanting, focused meditation, and other methods.

So how could someone get started with sex magic?

Set the Mood

You’ll want to begin by setting the mood. In order to enhance the energetic build up and release, you’ll want to give yourself a sexy setting. This really depends on you and your preferences.

  • Some people love satin sheets and rose petals and champagne in tall flute glasses with strawberries.
  • Some people prefer a plush rug next to a crackling fire in the fireplace with hot chocolate and marshmallows to drink.
  • Someone else may like a warm bubble bath surrounded by candles and crystals and a plate of fresh fruit.
  • And someone else may want to be outside in a secluded and private area under the stars.

These are just examples, you might want something completely different.

You’ll also want to enter this as you would any other ritual or spellwork you do. Cleanse yourself and your space, set up an altar, cast a circle, ground and center, call in your correspondences. A combination of all, some, or none of these things.

Sex Magic Warnings

Before we get to some of the exercises, we wanted to mention consent and sex magic. If you plan to practice sex magic with a partner or other people, it’s a good idea to inform them. This is out of respect for them and also an opportunity to amplify the intention with the help of others.

Additionally, as with any group or religion where there is a power imbalance between a leader and a follower, the spiritual community of pagans and witches has a history of abuse. And abusers have been allowed to hide behind the secrecy of their tradition.

Teachers, mentors and group leaders should not pressure their students into sex, sexual activity, or non-consensual physical contact for any reason. And students, and group members should view this behavior as a red flag and a sign that this group is unsafe.

Consent is an expression of love and trust. It is required in a teacher student relationship. Everyone, no matter what their belief system, has a right to bodily autonomy, to practice in a way that is free of abuse and coercion, and to speak out about predators even if it breaks secrecy codes of the group.

Sex Magic Exercises

Breathing

Breathing is one of the easiest ways to build up energy in the body. Especially when paired with imagination. You can focus on any part of your body and imagine that each inhale sends breath to that spot and each exhale sends the breath flowing away again. Try focusing your breathing on your genitals and stimulate arousal.

You can also use breath to energize your body, filling yourself up with helpful energy as you inhale, and releasing unhelpful energy with your exhale.

Matching Breath with Movement

Breath not only helps us move energy around, but it also informs how our body moves. Anyone who practices yoga understands this. Breath can release tension, relax muscles, and deepen stretches. Focusing on your breath as your body moves and moving your body as you breathe can help you keep your focus on your intention.

Visualization

Visualization is a technique you can use while in a state of heightened arousal. Visualize your desired outcome: what does it look like, smell like, taste like, sound like, feel like? Channel all the electric energy in your body into this visualization, especially right as you orgasm.

Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra is the energy center of sexuality, passion, and creation. When this chakra is balanced, you are more connected to your desires and what brings you pleasure. Balance it by practicing ecstatic dance and with orange crystals and spicy herbs.

Chanting

While in the heat of the moment, begin chanting a word or phrase related to your desired outcome. Don’t worry too much about what you’re saying or how it sounds. Just speak the desire into existence.

We play one listener voicemail on each episode of Talk Witchcraft, with a few exceptions. To send us a voicemail, record a voice memo on your phone and email it to welisten at talkwitchcraft dot com. Please keep in mind that we only choose voicemails that are two minutes in length or shorter (even if they’re great!).

  • Share from your personal experiences (especially experiences that we could never have) and use that to illuminate the zodiac season or theme in new ways.
  • Ask questions of Erica and Maggie, so we have an opportunity to respond meaningfully to your voicemail during the podcast.
  • Use one of these prompts: Is there something happening with you and your life that aligns with the current zodiac season or a Tarot card? How do your experiences show us something new about the magic, something that we haven’t talked about so far?
  • Send a voicemail even if you’re behind on the podcast. If your voicemail is about a previous episode, zodiac season, or tarot card; that doesn’t mean we won’t choose it!

Tips for recording a great voicemail

  • Make sure you’re somewhere quiet.
  • Plan what you’re going to say ahead of time, because two minutes goes quickly.
  • Opt for talking freely based on a bullet pointed list rather than reading word-for word from a script.
  • Let us know if you’d prefer to remain anonymous.

A natural history of sex magic from Dr. Eubie - Talker of the Town

Brighton School Board candidate Melaney Bernhardt is un…An open invitation to a conversation in Nathaniel Squar…(Un) Writing an old wrong in Brighton’s Meadowbro… Posted by email protected | May 5, 2016 | Cultural Life, History | 0 | The Great Rite of Wicca involves symbolic sexual intercourse In the older western sources, sex magic was mostly something you accused your enemy of doing. These included orgies, ceremonial sex performances (with an audience), ritually imbibing sexual fluids and menstrual blood, and anointing objects with these same fluids. Sometimes with some infant sacrifice mixed in. Probably most groups accused of these things did not do them. Then there’s that sex magic is based on human imitation of divine creative power. If people thought creative power was based in a sexualized relation between human and divine, any ritual performed to activate that power was sex magic. So in some of the earlier sources, it would simply be visualization of the divine body, or performing letter combinations with the understanding that god created the universe by combining sexualized letters. With the development of kabbalah, in the 12th and thirteenth centuries, things changed. Kabbalists saw creation as the emanation of the divine substance into ten sefirot, which were gendered, and had sex with each other. When they did that, creation was completed. It was also the way that divine energy or blessings flowed into and sustained the world. So kabbalists thought that they could draw down blessings by having sex, kind of the opposite of the ‘as above, so below’ principle. They thought if they had sanctified sex, God would do so too. Then the blessings would rain down. This was a private affair but it’s pretty well absorbed into Hasidism. At other times, in 16th and 17th century Safed, some people used sex magic(prostrating themselves on the gravestones of saints in various attitudes) to draw down the souls of those saints. There were some developments of this too with the Sabbatian and Frankist movements (both Jewish, but antinomian and branded heretical) who allegedly performed public sex acts to bring about the redemption, and who are both reputed to have consumed some fluids. Two replica Incan erotic sculptures I bought in Peru. (left) Ceramic vessel, erotic art Moche culture 100 AC – 800 AC. (right) a gay orgy. see A 1997 trip to deep Peru retracing the Shining Path This changed in the 19th Century Europe, with the Europeans getting all orientalist. Western esotericism was born out of that impulse: to combine western forms of mystical and magical practice with Indian and Muslim ritual. Satanism as we know it now came out of these Western Esotericist or Theospohist doctrines. One of the most important nineteenth century theorists of was Paschal Beverly Randolph, who was not a satanist but claimed to have been initiated into Gnostic, Tantric, and Sufi rituals. For him, the experience of sexual orgasm is the critical moment in human consciousness and the key to magical power: “true Sex-power is God-power,” as he put it. The moment when new life is infused from the spiritual realm into the material is crucial moment — the soul is suddenly opened up to the spiritual energies of the cosmos. “At the instant of intense mutual orgasm the souls of the partners are opened to the powers of the cosmos and anything truly willed is accomplished.” That’s from his Eulis. This ritual was performed in private, and in the context of marriage, I believe. Two of the early groups were the Ordo Templi Orientis, and the Order of the Golden Dawn. Aleceister Crowley filtered Randoph’s ideas through the teachings of groups but also slapped on some of those late antique heretical accusations of fluid drinking, and ritual anointing of talismans with fluids. And because Crowley lived in Victorian times, he understood well the power of taboo. So he threw in some auto-eroticism and anal elements. From my parent’s porch. Postcard my mother brought back from TARQUINIA – Necropoli: Tomba dei, Tor Tombeau des Tori, Tori Grave, Tori Grab. Maybe sex magic works into your 80s And I’ll quote Hugh Urban on that: In Crowley’s revised system, however, the O.T.O.’s nine degrees were expanded to eleven. The eighth, ninth and eleventh of these focused on more explicitly transgressive sexual rites of auto-erotic and homosexual intercourse. As Peter Koenig summarizes the upper degrees: Crowley’s VIIIth degree unveiled… that masturbating on a sigil of a demon or meditating upon the image of a phallus would bring power or communication with a divine being. . . . The IXth degree was labeled heterosexual intercourse where the sexual secrets were sucked out of the vagina and when not consumed…put on a sigil to attract this or that demon to fulfill the pertinent wish. . . . In the XIth degree, the mostly homosexual degree, one identifies oneself with an ejaculating penis. The blood (or excrements) from anal intercourse attract the spirits/demons while the sperm keeps them alive. The Hindu use a type of sex magic called Tantra. In many ways, this secret of sexual magic was really the key to his entire vision of a new Aeon based on the full affirmation of the Will and the complete liberation from the repressive, oppressive religions of the past. Indeed, Crowley takes the “repressive hypothesis” and the urge to sexual freedom to its furthest extreme: for he not only proclaims the liberation of sexuality from the prudish bonds of his Victorian childhood, but he also makes the most deviant and anti-social of sexual acts — namely, masturbation, oral consumption of sexual fluids and homosexual intercourse– the ultimate keys to magical power. In other words, he set out to usher in his own new Aeon by smashing and tearing down the entire social-moral structure of the world in which he was raised. And so it comes full circle. Tantra combined with kabbalah and late antique accusations of heresy meant to bust up Victorian repression with the power of satan. Dr. Eubie. RELATED How Conservative Am I Really? Since a criminal investigation—L’affaire des poisons (“Affair of the Poisons”)—was launched and testimony from those involved revealed the details of this Mass. At this time, the Black Mass was a typical Roman Catholic Mass, but modified according to certain formulas (some reminiscent of the Sworn Book of Honorius, or its French version, Grimoire of Pope Honorius). The priest utilized a woman as the central altar of worship, lying naked upon the altar with the chalice on her stomach, and holding a candle in each of her outstretched arms. The Host was consecrated in her vagina, and then used in love potions designed to gain the love of the King. To seal the power of the Mass, the priest had sex with the woman serving as the altar at the end of the ritual. Modern history Beverly Randolph The earliest known practical teachings of sex magic in the Western world comes from 19th-century American occultist, Paschal Beverly Randolph (1825-1875). The son of a wealthy Virginian father and a slave mother, he was a well-known spiritualist who was greatly influenced by the work of English Rosicrucian and scholar of phallicism, Hargrave Jennings. Randolph developed one of the most influential systems of sex magic. As per him, the moment when one reaches orgasm is the most intense and the most powerful experience a human can have in life, for in that moment the soul suddenly opens to the divine realm and the breath of God is infused. He said, “True sex-power is God-power.” As such, the power of orgasm can be used by a man and woman for various gains, both worldly and spiritual. Randolph insisted that for the magic to be effective and prayers be fulfilled, both the partners involved in should achieve orgasm at the same moment. His teachings were later passed on to numerous secret societies in Europe, the most notable being Ordo Templi Orientis or O.T.O founded by Carl Kellner and Theodor Reuss. Aleister Crowley In the latter part of the 19th century, sexual reformer Ida Craddock (1857-1902) published several works dealing with sacred sexuality, most notably Heavenly Bridegrooms and Psychic Wedlock. Aleister Crowley considered these teachings extremely important and incorporated them into his own Thelema magical system. He once said of Heavenly Bridegrooms, “This book is of incalculable value to every student of occult matters. No Magick library is complete without it.” Crowley believed sexual energy was the central force of humanity and wrote extensively on the topic of sex magick. Some of these works were published and made available to the general public, others were secret and could only be obtained by initiates of Ordo Templi Orientis. Maria de Naglowska Maria de Naglowska (1883–1936) was a Russian occultist, mystic, author and journalist who wrote and taught about sexual magical ritual practices while also being linked with the Parisian surrealist movement. She established and led an occult society known as the Confrérie de la Flèche d’or (Brotherhood of the Golden Arrow) in Paris from 1932 to 1935. She also published La Lumière du sexe (The Light of Sex), a mystic treatise and guide to sexual ritual that was required reading for those seeking to be initiated into the Brotherhood of the Golden Arrow. Her later book on advanced sexual magic practices, Le Mystère de la pendaison (The Hanging Mystery) details her advanced teachings on the Third Term of the Trinity and the spiritually transformative power of sex, and the practice of erotic ritual hanging and other sensory deprivation practices. Travis McHenry In 2023, occultistTravis McHenry released the Sexcraft Oracle, a deck of oracle cards based around sex magic and witchcraft. The deck was accompanied by a grimoire of sexual magic titled SEXCRAFT.
